Hotel history ...

Porth Tocyn was bought by my grand-parents back in the late 1940s, believing that tourism would be "the thing" for the post war years, and that Abersoch in particular would take off as a resort. They were right. My grandmother had very clear ideas of what she wanted to achieve. Porth Tocyn was to become one of the first generation of "Country House Hotels" along with others like Sharrow Bay in the Lake District. The idea was to recreate inter-war country house living with good food and conviviality.

Over the intervening years the house has evolved into a really warm cottagey country house hotel ready for the new millennium. This masks its humble beginnings as a row of mining cottages for the lead mines which closed down in 1898, its period thereafter as a "gentleman´s residence", its war time storage of Home Guard ammunition, and its short time as a quasi-guest house serving (I am told) the most horrible food on the peninsula!

It is a home from home where guests come back again and again ...
